Jim Stone is a New Zealander who flew with all the other Kiwis to Europe, joined McLaren, and prepped winning Can-Am cars for Denny Hulme. “The culture of Ford and Holden here is huge.” What if some other automaker tried to enter? “We’re parallel to NASCAR in many ways, but if we let Toyota in, we’d be lynched,” dryly declared Jim Stone, a team co-owner and a figure in the series management. It is true you see Chryslers on track, Hemi-powered 300Cs, but you only see them as pace and safety cars, because they’re imports. Thus only Ford and the local GM brand, Holden, can participate. But a decade ago the series was restructured to exclude any but Australian-made cars with V8 engines-pushrod-V8 engines driving the rear wheels, at that. In the early years, champions drove Jaguar sedans, Ford Cortinas and Mustangs, Chevrolet Camaros, Mazdas, BMWs, Volvos and, for three years straight, Nissan Skylines. Nowadays the only eligible cars are indeed Australian. It also puts on a non-championship show accompanying Australia’s F1 Grand Prix. ![]() Today, under its present name, the V8 Supercar series runs 13 events in every state of the country plus New Zealand and, starting this year, Bahrain. In-country, the masses embraced the Australian Touring Car Championship as their own. What Aussies term touring car racing has a history dating back before 1960, but that was the year a solo, major event at Bathurst’s Mount Panorama circuit first determined a national championship.Ĭall it ironic, perhaps, that 1960 also was the year Sir Jack Brabham won his second F1 world title. “Single seaters don’t work here,” was one pit-lane comment we heard. Just as in America these days, sedans are the top racing dogs in Australia. So just what are these Supercars from Oz? Think NASCAR Way South. The crowd loves it.īTW, if you’ve heard about “inverted starts” for these Top 10, that’s been dropped. But then Supercars adds a Friday evening “Top Ten Shootout,” in which the 10 fastest drivers go out again, one at a time, to settle the front-third of the first grid with a single flying lap apiece. Qualifying is also part of the show, of course, and Champ Cars do that on both Friday and Saturday, whereas there’s only one such general session for the Supercars on Friday. Supercars puts on its first race Saturday and the second and third on Sunday, bracketing the “Champs.” That means the crowd’s last, lasting impression of their “Indy” weekend is of their beloved “V8s” roaring through the streets. Supercars: Three times 22 laps for 66 in all.įor points-scoring, each Supercar race counts separately, and the weekend package of three races is called a “round” of the 13-round series. Supercars had 30 on the starting grid of its first race and then raced twice more. Champ Car brought 18 drivers to Surfers, of whom 17 raced-once. And he went on to assert much the same about Formula One in Melbourne. ![]() Translated, he was asserting that the “Indy” race-they’re not bound down there to respect Tony George’s claim to the name-would never have lasted the 16 years it has on the Gold Coast without the Australian V8 Supercar Championship Series rolling into town to draw the real crowds. “Oi reckon the Chaamp Cahs ah good fun ‘n’ all, but thay’h the support-race to the Supacahs. “Nao, Mate,” one heavily-accented (to our ears) Aussie corrected us in a friendly but firm fashion. That’s before you hear how rapturously the locals cheer their own homegrown Supercars. Venture to Australia’s Surfers Paradise with the Champ Car Circus, as AutoWeek did recently, and your baggage may include some notion that the turbocharged open-wheelers from the north side of the globe are going to be the stars of the South Pacific streets.

Statewide, just two regions had the stay-at-home order removed: the greater Sacramento region, which left the order on 12 January, and the northern California region, which never entered the order. Regions such as southern California, where one in three Los Angeles county residents are believed to have been infected with coronavirus, and the rural San Joaquin Valley, where hospital capacity was never much to begin with, have been under lockdown since the first week of December. Newsom instituted the regional stay-at-home order in December that was dependent on intensive care unit capacity. “My quintessential question: How are low income communities of color and essential workers being impacted by this order? Why do I have to keep asking this question?” “This new executive order is surprising,” tweeted Lena Gonzalez, a California state senator. ![]() Others expressed dismay at how the order will affect low-income communities of color that have already been disproportionately affected by the pandemic because so many work as essential workers in service industry jobs. In Los Angeles county, home to 10 million people, the Republican district supervisor Kathryn Barger expressed support for opening outdoor dining, personal care services and other industries and said the state must balance public health with “devastating social, emotional and economic impacts of this virus”.Los Angeles county public health officials are expected to hold a briefing later on Monday. Orange county planned to lift some restrictions as well, said Jessica Good, a spokeswoman for the county health agency. “We will be moving forward with some limited reopenings, including outdoor dining and personal services,” said the San Francisco mayor, London Breed, in a tweet. Public officials in some of California’s major cities and counties indicated they could soon lift local restrictions. It also comes as more than 50 wine country-based restaurants and wineries have filed a lawsuit against Newsomover the state’s restrictions on outdoor dining. Monday’s announcement follows months of a relentless case surge that exhausted the healthcare system statewide and made California the first US state to record 3m Covid-19 infections. Newsom said on Monday that California averaged 23,283 new coronavirus cases a day over the past week, and its positivity rate was down to 8%, below that of Texas, Florida and Arizona. The decision came amid improving trends in the state’s rate of infections, hospitalizations and intensive care unit capacity as well as vaccinations. Local officials still could choose to impose stricter rules. ![]() It lifts an evening curfew and, in many areas, will allow restaurants and churches to resume outdoor operations and hair and nail salons to reopen. Monday’s change moves counties back to a tiered system of reopening, with most regions across the state expected to move into the most restrictive tier. 11/27/2023 0 Comments Buck rivet drill![]() Once placed in this predrilled hole, the bucktail is upset or deformed by any of several methods from hand-held hammers to pneumatically driven squeezing tools. ![]() To secure two or more pieces of sheet metal together, the rivet is placed into a hole cut just a bit larger in diameter than the rivet itself. Since rivets are permanently installed, they must be removed by drilling them out, a laborious task.īefore installation, the rivet consists of a smooth cylindrical shaft with a factory head on one end. Riveted joints are neither airtight nor watertight unless special seals or coatings are used. ![]() The longer the total grip length (the total thickness of sheets being joined), the more difficult it becomes to lock the rivet. Rivets should not be used in thick materials or in tensile applications, as their tensile strengths are quite low relative to their shear strength. They are faster to install than bolts and nuts since they adapt well to automatic, high-speed installation tools. Widely used in the aircraft manufacturing industry, solid shank rivets are relatively low-cost, permanently installed fasteners. Used to join aircraft structures, solid shank rivets are one of the oldest and most reliable types of fastener. ![]() The solid shank rivet is the most common type of rivet used in aircraft construction. For the purposes of this discussion, fasteners are divided into two main groups: solid shank rivets and special purpose fasteners that include blind rivets. Since some structural fasteners are common to all aircraft, this post focuses on the more frequently used fasteners. You will have to drill the hole to a larger size and use a bigger rivet if you damage the hole, so be careful while removing rivets.Structural fasteners, used to join sheet metal structures securely, come in thousands of shapes and sizes with many of them specialized and specific to certain aircraft. Remove faulty rivets by drilling straight through their centers and knocking out the remains of the rivet with a punch. The formed head diameter should be about 50 percent larger than the rivet diameter, and its thickness should be about half of the rivet's diameter. It should be round, flat and centered on the rivet. Inspect the rear of the rivet for a properly formed head. Inspect the front and back of the rivet for damage. Release the trigger when the bucker signals you to do so. Squeeze the trigger of the rivet gun only when the rivet bucker signals you to do so. He will hold a heavy metal bucking bar against the tail of the rivet and signal you to start riveting. Position another worker at the tail of the rivet to buck it. Make sure the rivet, die and gun are all aligned. Press the rivet die firmly against the rivet. Dies that are too small may damage the rivet, and dies that are too large may damage the surrounding metal. It is also important to choose the correct size die. Rivet dies for countersunk rivets will be flat, while protruding-head rivet dies will be concave. Install an appropriate rivet die into a rivet gun. In the riveting process, the rivet will expand to fill the hole, and the excess length of the rivet will flatten to make its formed head. The rivet will have a slightly smaller diameter than the hole diameter, and it will be slightly longer than the thickness of the material being riveted. 11/27/2023 0 Comments Fire mountain gems gallery of designs![]() How did you like this resource?
